Dr. Heather Martarella, PsyD, is a dedicated and compassionate pain psychologist. She began her journey of working with chronic pain patients during her postdoctoral fellowship at Kaiser in 2006, while also providing general clinical psychotherapy both prior to and after this period until 2014. An injury in 2012, which resulted in her own experience with chronic pain, inspired a career shift. By early 2014, after receiving additional education and professional experience, she began focusing exclusively on chronic pain management.

Dr. Martarella has held multiple roles in pain management, including serving as the Director of Compass Center for Functional Restoration at Sacramento Pain Clinic. In this role, she managed a multidisciplinary team, developed curricula, and provided pain neuroscience classes along with individual and group pain psychotherapy. She also worked as a Pain Psychologist at multiple Kaiser Pain Management and Pain Medicine Departments in South Sacramento, San Jose, and Napa/Vallejo.

She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology with neuropsychology and multicultural competency emphases from John F. Kennedy University. She completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of San Francisco and Kaiser. Her academic contributions include roles as Department Chair, Director of Training, and Associate Professor at Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area campus, along with teaching positions at various other universities.

Dr. Martarella is a past President of the Association of Family Therapists of Northern California and currently serves as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee Chair for the American Association of Pain Psychology. She is known for her empathetic and educational approach and her dedication to providing hope as she helps those experiencing chronic pain find relief.
